Shiloh National Military Park, June 17, 2009
On April 6 and 7, 1862, it was hot like today, but the undergrowth
in this area, just up the sunken road from the infamous Hornets
Nest, was overgrown with underbrush so thick that advancing
Confederate troops did not fall when they were shot. The air was
heavy with smoke, and the noise of rifle fire and the Union
artillery battery was thunderous. Civil War soldiers were trained to
fire three aimed shots per minute. 10,000 troops were lined up on
each side. Just behind me is where General Albert Sidney Johnston,
the Confederacy's most effective general, died after nearly winning
a great battle against almost impossible odds. He bled to death with
a tourniquet in his pocket. Please sign my guest book and listen to
more of the story.
