On April 6 and 7, 1862, it was hot like today, but the undergrowth in this area, just up the sunken road from the infamous Hornets Nest, was overgrown with underbrush so thick that advancing Confederate troops did not fall when they were shot. The air was heavy with smoke, and the noise of rifle fire and the Union artillery battery was thunderous. Civil War soldiers were trained to fire three aimed shots per minute. 10,000 troops were lined up on each side. Just behind me is where General Albert Sidney Johnston, the Confederacy's most effective general, died after nearly winning a great battle against almost impossible odds.
